Grower's Guide

Onions are typically planted in early spring, as soon as the ground can be worked. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Plant onion sets 1-2 inches deep and 4-6 inches apart. For onion seeds, start them indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost.
Onions need consistent moisture, especially during bulb formation. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on weather conditions. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.
Onions are heavy feeders and benefit from regular fertilization. Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting time and side-dress with nitrogen fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
Onions are ready to harvest when the tops begin to fall over. Gently pull the onions from the ground and allow them to dry in the sun for a few days. Cure the onions in a well-ventilated area for 2-3 weeks before storing.
Store cured onions in a cool, dry, and dark place. Braiding the tops together and hanging them is a traditional storage method. Properly stored onions can last for several months.
